HOW TO GET THERE

From Victoria International Airport (YYJ)

Distance and time: about 27 kilometers (17 miles) and 30 minutes by car.

Driving

  1. Exit the airport and follow signs to Highway 17 South toward Victoria.

  2. Continue on Highway 17 (Trans-Canada Highway) into the city.

  3. Highway 17 becomes Blanshard Street, then Belleville Street.

  4. Turn right onto Government Street.

  5. The Fairmont Empress will be on your left, overlooking the Inner Harbour.

Taxi / Rideshare

  • Taxis and rideshares like Uber are available at YYJ and will take you directly downtown (~30 to 40 minutes). Estimated fare is commonly around $60 to $75 CAD one way.

  • Rideshare pickup areas are well marked outside the terminal.

Shuttle or Bus

  • Airport shuttle services are offered (book ahead). One option runs about every 30 minutes and drops downtown near the Inner Harbour.

  • Public transit (BC Transit Route 72) runs from YYJ to downtown Victoria, typically 35 to 45 minutes. 

 

 

From Victoria Inner Harbour Airport (YWH)

This smaller airport is very close to downtown and only minutes from the hotel:

  • Walking: Depending on arrival point near the harbour it can be less than a 10-minute walk to Fairmont Empress.

  • Taxi / Rideshare: Available curbside and very short ride to hotel.

 

From Vancouver or the Mainland

By Air

  • Fly from Vancouver International Airport (YVR) or Vancouver Harbour Flight Centre to Victoria (either YYJ or YWH). Several airlines and floatplane services operate flights daily.

By Bus + Ferry

  • BC Ferries Connector provides a combined bus + ferry service from Vancouver International Airport or downtown Vancouver directly to Victoria’s bus depot, which is within walking distance of the Fairmont Empress.

By Ferry + Drive

  • If arriving by ferry at Swartz Bay, join Highway 17 South and follow it into downtown Victoria, then turn right onto Government Street to reach the hotel (about 30-40 minutes).

  • You can take public transit from Swartz Bay too (Route 70), but it takes longer and may include luggage handling challenges. 

 

 

If Driving Yourself (From Mainland or Vancouver Island)

From Vancouver Island

  • Take Highway 17 South (Trans-Canada) toward Victoria.

  • Highway 17 becomes Blanshard Street then Belleville Street as you enter the city.

  • Turn right on Government Street — the Fairmont Empress sits on the Inner Harbour.

 

Local Transit & Getting Around Downtown

Public Transit:

  • Once in downtown Victoria, several bus lines stop near the hotel (stops like Douglas at Humboldt, Burdett Ave at Douglas St).

  • Single-ride fares are inexpensive and buses run frequently.

Walking:

  • Victoria’s Inner Harbour downtown core is very walkable. From most downtown points, the Fairmont Empress is an easy walk.
